Steve and Flash: A Boy and His Dog

Maybe this is a product of growing up in Oklahoma and choosing to live in a semi-rural area of Colorado, but nearly everyone I know has at least one dog as a pet. Almost without exception, and perhaps not surprisingly, it seems that most people and their dogs mirror each other in some ways, especially personality-wise. In some cases, we as owners project bits of our own personalities onto our dogs in an attempt to understand things about ourselves: "He doesn't like to be alone," or "She's insane and hyperactive and needs Valium." :)
All of this to say: At first glance, Steve and his dog Flash look pretty tough.

But on the inside, they're both the sweetest people you'll ever meet.

I mean dang. Steve loves his dog. He lives in Arizona and works on the oil rigs in Wyoming. Every other week he drives Flash to Colorado to spend time with his parents while he goes to work so Flash doesn't have to be in a kennel. It's obvious that Steve has put in a lot of time into training Flash and keeping him healthy. I've never met a hound dog with a recall as good as Flash's. These two have a serious bond.

ANYway, on with the photos. This was my first photo shoot since I've moved back to Colorado, and it was a lot of fun. Thanks to Steve for crawling under fences and rolling around in horse poo to get a lot of these shots.

Generally speaking, I by far prefer black and white photos, but with Flash's colors against the winter grass, I kept a surprising number (for me) of these in color.

Treat motivation is a good thing.

Flash knew I had a pocket full of snacks.

Next time Steve and Flash are in town, we're going to do some studio shots. I might also kidnap Flash at that time. I'm serious: He is one of the best dogs I've ever met. I have total Basset envy right now.

Thanks for stopping by the blog ... I know it had been forever since I'd posted. Lots of changes going on (including a move from MT to CO, obviously) but I'm very excited for 2011. It's going to be a good year. :)
